  • A way to cope with loneliness or frustration
  • If you have a habit of biting fingernails, it could be a symptom of another underlying psychological issues such as obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), or separation anxiety.

If your habit of biting fingernails is severe enough that you are causing your skin and cuticles to bleed, it may even be considered a form of self-mutilation.

  • It’s just plain embarrassing – having to hide your fingers every time you talk to someone or lean over to sign a document.
